Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program was created to encourage individuals to enter and continue to work full-time in public service jobs. Under this program, you may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance due on your eligible federal student loans after you have made 120 payments on loans under certain repayment plans while employed full time by certain public service employers.

Only non-defaulted loans made under the William D. Ford Direct Loan ProgramSM are eligible for loan forgiveness. The Direct Loan Program includes the following types of loans:

•Federal Direct Stafford Loans (Direct Subsidized Loans)
•Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loans (Direct Unsubsidized Loans)
•Federal Direct PLUS Loans (Direct PLUS Loans)- for parents and graduate or professional students
•Federal Direct Consolidation Loans (Direct Consolidation Loans)

Although loan forgiveness under this program is available only for loans made and repaid under the Direct Loan Program, loans made under other federal student loan programs may qualify for forgiveness if they are consolidated into a Direct Consolidation Loan. Therefore, only payments made on the Direct Consolidation Loan will count toward the required 120 monthly payments.

The 120 required payments must be made under one or more of the following Direct Loan Program repayment plans:

•Income Based Repayment (IBR) Plan
•Income Contingent Repayment Plan
•Standard Repayment Plan with a 10-year repayment period
•Any other Direct Loan Program repayment plan, but only payments that are at least equal to the monthly payment amount that would have been required under the Standard Repayment Plan with a 10-year repayment period may be counted toward the required 120 payments.

I need my life-saving medication

Hi, I am a 24 y/o EMT, and I don't make very much money. I recently graduated from a major university. Yes, it did leave me in debt. I have migraines, endometriosis, asthma, and epilepsy. Due to the endometriosis, asthma, and epilepsy, I am on medication for the rest of my life. The epilepsy medication is what keeps me alive. (Did you know that over 40,000 epileptics die every year due to their epilepsy?) The problem is, at the beginning of the year, when I renewed my Patient Prescription Assistance Program; they told me they could no longer help me. I was doing fine before this happened. I live on my own. I don’t really have any family. I’m paying over $500 a month in living expenses, around $400/month in school debt, and my medication costs $321.44/month. I have to pay cash to the doctors (I have multiple doctors) when I get sick and when I go in for my quarterly checkups (these cost minimum of $150.00) I can’t get health insurance because of pre-existing conditions. I can’t get government help because I don’t have children. (The state once told me its okay if I die, because I don’t have children.) I have been taking only half of my medication to cut back on costs. I am afraid of the consequences of doing this, but I don’t see any other ways to cut corners. I don’t even have food, instead friends invite me over for dinner, and most of the time they send the leftovers home with me. I am not asking for pity. I have became accustomed to this kind of lifestyle. I just don’t want to keep cutting my medication, because I know where that leads to. My remaining school debt is just over about $9,000.00, so I’m only asking for $8,000. I’m sure once I get the school debt paid off, I’ll be okay. I appreciate any help this community can offer me. I have confidence in this community, because I know someone is willing to help look out for me.
